Minimizing Bycatch: Selective Fishing for a Healthier Ocean

Targeted Harvesting with Minimal Ecological Impact

Bycatch—the incidental capture of non-target species—is a critical issue in global fisheries. Southern Cal Seafood is committed to minimizing bycatch through the use of highly selective fishing gear and best practices developed in collaboration with the fishing fleet and marine scientists.

The Advantage of Purse Seine

Our primary method for harvesting Pacific Sardines and Northern Anchovies is the **Purse Seine**. This method is inherently selective for schooling pelagic species, resulting in significantly lower bycatch rates compared to other gear types. Key features of our operation include:

  • Targeted Species: Our fishing operations are precisely timed and located to target dense schools of the desired species.
  • Rapid Identification: Crew members are trained to quickly identify non-target species and release them immediately upon bringing the net alongside the vessel.
  • Night Fishing for Squid: The California Market Squid fishery, which uses lights to attract squid, is also highly selective, minimizing the capture of other marine life.

Continuous Improvement

We are constantly exploring and investing in new technologies and operational changes to further reduce our environmental footprint, including acoustic deterrents and modified net designs to improve selectivity.

Transparency in Practice

We support the presence of independent observers on our vessels when required by regulatory bodies to ensure full compliance and accurate reporting of all catch data.
